On December 14th 2012 the second deadliest school shooting in US history took place at Sandy Hook Elementary, Newtown, Connecticut. After killing his mother, 20 year old Adam Lanza shot twenty children and six adult staff members before committing suicide. His primary weapon of choice was the Bushmaster AR-15, a semi-automatic rifle.
The shooting has prompted a renewed and on-going debate about gun control in the US, and a proposal for new legislation banning the sale and manufacture of certain types of semi-automatic weapons.
I wanted to know more about the reaction in the US to the shooting and spoke to my friend Andrew Davis. I met Andrew whilst living in Prague, Czech Republic in 2008 where we both taught English as a foreign language. Andrew hails from Northampton, Massachusetts but currently lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, studying law. Northampton is only 70 miles (115km) away from where the shooting took place.
